What is IEC 60870-5-104?

IEC 60870-5-104 is a communication protocol for electric power system control instituted by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It provides network access to enable management and exchange of information related to electric power systems. Specifically, it is used to control and monitor electric power systems such as Substation Automation Systems (SAS), Distribution Management Systems (DMS), and Energy Management Systems (EMS).

With IEC 60870-5-104, communication services such as data conversion, monitoring, and control are provided in real time via TCP/IP networks. This allows electric power systems to operate with high efficiency and reliability.

By converting IEC 60870-5-104 to OPC UA communication, the OPC UA Client function included in SCADA systems can perform integrated control and monitoring.

In addition, DeviceXPlorer OPC Server also supports other communication protocols for electric power systems, such as IEC 61850 MMS and DNP3.
