What is the Difference Between a Software Key and a Hardware key?

2025.11.14

For the products listed below, you can choose either a software key or a hardware key for license activation (excluding subscription versions).

This article outlines the differences between these two key types.

Applicable Products

This article applies to the following products:

  • DeviceXplorer OPC Server (DxpSERVER) Ver. 6 or later
  • DeviceXplorer Data Logger (DxpLOGGER) Ver. 3 or later
  • DeviceGateway on Docker (Software Version)

Software Key

Activation is carried out online using a ticket ID issued for each product.
If the PC where the product is installed is offline, you can still complete authentication by using another PC with Internet access and exchanging files.

Hardware Key

The license is activated by inserting a USB key into the PC where the product is installed.
The USB key must remain connected while the product is running.
